Each lesson of the day started with the teachers of Years 7, 8 and 9 reading installments from the novel ‘Raven’, by Tommy Donvaband. As the story unfolded, we learned about a young “goth” girl named Poppy, who now wants to be called Raven – and who dyes her hair bright pink because her mum told her she couldn’t dye it black.
We discover that her brother, Stephen, has gone missing, which has led to her mum being extremely over-protective, and to her dad spending all his time in the shed. Raven decides she has to get her brother back somehow – breaking a girl’s nose; feeding a snake fish and chips - and setting fire to the shed along the way! Each part of the story ended on a cliffhanger and the ending was very unexpected.
The book is available to borrow from the school’s library and is one of this year’s Reading Rampage titles. Students were also given a £1 World Book Day token.
