A group of music students from Y7-12 had a workshop from Dr Sophie Ransby, from the Southbank Centre in London on 16th June. Currently the school is very fortunate to have the loan of the “Firebird Gamelan” from Lincoln.
A gamelan is an Indonesian temple instrument made up of gongs, metallophones and drums. Over the next year students will be learning to play the instruments and this workshop was an introduction for students from our orchestra and teachers. During the session students learned about the pelog scale to which the instruments are tuned and how to control the instruments, whilst learning the different parts to a piece of music from Java. We look forward to a Gamelan concert next academic year and further workshops with Sophie.
