Congratulations to Alice Wright, Head Girl 2013-14, who was awarded her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award by Prince Edward at Buckingham Palace last Monday at a garden party also attended by the Duke of Edinburgh himself.
Alice is the first student to have completed a Gold Award as part of the school's DE programme which was started by Mr Manger and Miss Spink a few years ago, so it was a cause for a dual celebration! Alice is now finishing the second year of a Music degree at Bristol University.
On the day of the presentation she took an examination about Music in the 1930s in the morning and then caught a bus to London and received her award at a Buckingham Palace garden party in the late afternoon: such is the character of the recipient of a Gold Award. The reception took place outdoors in the beautiful gardens of the palace and Mr Carney and Mrs Snart (DE Award Manager) were also invited to attend because it is the Sixtieth Anniversary year of the DE Award this year.
Congratulations to Alice and all those students who have achieved Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards this year. Thank you to Mr Manger, Miss Spink, Mrs Snart and the many other adults who spend a lot of time teaching the necessary skills and giving up many weekends in the summer season to make the expeditions possible. As a result of their generosity, the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme is now a wonderful and well established feature of school life.
